Ubuntu Raises Minimum RAM to 6GB: The Honesty Bump

For years, Linux distributions like Ubuntu have been the go-to solution for reviving aging hardware. While Windows became increasingly bloated, Linux remained the lightweight alternative. However, the tides are turning. Canonical, the developer behind Ubuntu, has officially raised the minimum system RAM requirement to 6GB. They are calling this an "honesty bump," acknowledging that the previous 4GB limit simply wasn't cutting it for a modern computing experience.

Even though the Linux kernel itself remains relatively lean, the applications we use every day have grown significantly heavier. Modern web browsers like Google Chrome and Firefox are notorious memory hogs. Opening just a few tabs can easily consume 2-3GB of RAM, leaving very little room for the operating system and other background tasks.

The timing of this announcement is particularly interesting. We are currently seeing global RAM shortages and price fluctuations that are hitting PC enthusiasts hard. Increasing system requirements during a hardware crunch might seem counterintuitive, but Canonical argues that being honest with users is more important than maintaining an unrealistic minimum. If you try to run Ubuntu 24.04 or newer on a machine with 4GB of RAM, you'll likely experience significant slowdowns and "swapping," where the system uses the slow hard drive as temporary memory.

So, what does this mean for the average user? If you are planning to install Ubuntu on an older machine, you might want to consider a hardware upgrade first. Adding an extra stick of RAM is often the cheapest way to make an old PC feel new again. Alternatively, users with truly low-end hardware might need to look toward lighter variants like Xubuntu or Lubuntu, which use more efficient desktop environments to keep memory usage in check. It seems the days of a full-featured desktop OS running comfortably on 4GB are officially behind us.
