Windows 11's Xbox Mode Brings Full‑Screen Gaming UI

If you liked the console‑style experience on handheld Windows devices, Microsoft is expanding that idea to more PCs. Starting in April, select Windows 11 machines in certain markets will get an optional "Xbox mode," a full‑screen, controller‑friendly gaming UI that hides traditional desktop elements like the Start menu and taskbar.

The feature first appeared last year on the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X handheld, where a bespoke controller‑driven interface sat on top of Windows 11. The underlying operating system remained unchanged, and users could switch to the classic Windows desktop at any time. Now Microsoft is bringing the same idea to ordinary PCs, aiming to deliver a more focused gaming experience without forcing users to give up Windows' general capabilities.

Microsoft says Xbox mode doesn’t run a different OS — it’s still Windows under the hood — but it prevents certain system services and UI elements from launching. That, the company claims, can free up roughly a gigabyte or two of RAM and cut energy use, which could matter on thinner laptops and handheld-style devices. When you're done playing, you can switch back to the regular desktop to access apps, multitask, or use productivity tools.

For players who use controllers or prefer a simpler, more immersive interface, this will feel familiar — think Steam Deck's streamlined gaming UI, but integrated into Windows. Early availability is limited to select markets and PCs, so not everyone will see the toggle immediately. Still, it’s a signal that Microsoft is trying to make Windows more adaptable to different playstyles and device formats.
