Xiaomi Unveils 18 Fold: A Wider, Shorter Foldable Contender

Xiaomi has entered the competitive foldable market with its new 18 Fold, featuring a unique short and wide design. This device aims to challenge existing players with its impressive specifications.
Xiaomi is making waves in the foldable phone arena with the introduction of its latest device, the 18 Fold. This new entrant sports a distinct short and wide form factor, arriving in the same week that Apple is also anticipated to unveil its own foldable offering. We had the chance to get hands-on with the 18 Fold at IFA last week, and initial impressions suggest it's a compelling alternative to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8.
While it shares a visual and tactile resemblance to Samsung's popular foldable, the 18 Fold boasts superior specifications that make it feel like the device many have been wishing for. This marks Xiaomi's return to the book-style foldable segment since the Mix Fold 4 in 2024, but the company has opted for a more compact, squatter design, following trends set by Huawei and Samsung. In fact, Xiaomi's 18 Fold is even shorter and wider than Samsung's offering, presenting an aspect ratio of approximately 1.4:1 on both its 7.58-inch internal display and its 5.38-inch external screen.
The design choice to prioritize width over length could prove to be a game-changer for usability, potentially offering a more comfortable grip and a tablet-like experience when unfolded. While full details on pricing and availability are still emerging, the 18 Fold's promising specs and distinctive form factor position it as a significant contender in the rapidly evolving foldable smartphone market. Tech enthusiasts will be eager to see how it stacks up against the competition and whether this wider design philosophy catches on.
