Google is pushing its AI ambitions across its product suite, and YouTube is the latest platform to get an AI-powered makeover. The video giant has begun testing a new feature dubbed 'Ask YouTube,' designed to transform search queries into more of a conversation.

This experimental mode allows users to ask complex questions and receive comprehensive results that integrate both video clips and text summaries. Google highlights that users can then ask follow-up questions to delve deeper into topics, making the search process more interactive and informative. The feature is currently available to Premium subscribers aged 18 and above in the US, running until June 8.

To try out 'Ask YouTube,' users need to enable the feature within their account settings. Once activated, a new 'Ask YouTube' button will appear in the search bar. Users can either select from suggested prompts or type in their own, such as planning a road trip or inquiring about historical events. The system then generates a blend of relevant videos and textual explanations.

Early tests, like those reported by The Verge, indicate that the AI can provide detailed summaries for queries like the Apollo 11 moon landing, complete with video timestamps. However, as is often the case with current AI technology, there can be occasional inaccuracies. One user reported that a query about a Steam Controller returned factually incorrect information.

While tech companies are enthusiastically embracing AI, public reception can be mixed, especially on platforms like YouTube where users are often critical of AI-generated content. The success of 'Ask YouTube' will likely hinge on its ability to genuinely help users discover high-quality content more efficiently, rather than simply adding another layer of AI to the platform.
