For years, Legend of Zelda fans have been teased by stunning fan-made Unreal Engine tech demos, dreaming of what a modern Link would look like in Hyrule's most iconic adventure. Now, it looks like those dreams might finally be coming true. According to recent industry whispers, a ground-up remake of the seminal Nintendo 64 classic, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, is reportedly in development for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

The news comes from reliable Nintendo insider NatetheHate, who shared in a recent podcast that this isn't just a simple HD remaster. While it is unclear if Nintendo is sticking to a strict 1:1 recreation or taking some creative liberties with the world design, the project is described as an ambitious undertaking slated for the second half of 2026. This timing makes perfect sense, as 2026 marks the 40th anniversary of the Zelda franchise, and what better way to celebrate than by revisiting the game often cited as the greatest of all time?

Beyond the nostalgia, there are strategic reasons for this release. A live-action Zelda movie is currently in the works for a 2027 release, and Nintendo likely wants to ensure the new generation of fans is well-acquainted with the lore of Ocarina of Time before it hits the big screen. However, it’s not all good news for everyone; the same sources suggest that those waiting for a new 3D Mario title in 2026 might be disappointed, as that project has reportedly shifted into 2027.

In a surprising twist, we might also see the return of Star Fox this summer with a new "classic-style" entry. This coincides with Fox McCloud’s upcoming appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. While we wait for official confirmation from Nintendo, these leaks paint a very exciting picture for the early years of the Switch 2. Just keep in mind that with new hardware, Nintendo may also be adjusting its pricing strategy for physical versus digital games, so staying tuned for official details is more important than ever.
