Anbernic RG Rotate: The Retro Handheld with a Swivel Twist
Eda Kaplan
Anbernic has unveiled the RG Rotate, a unique retro handheld featuring a swiveling screen reminiscent of the classic T-Mobile Sidekick. This Android-powered device boasts an aluminum frame and customizable buttons for a personalized gaming experience.
The retro gaming handheld market is getting a bit crowded these days, but Anbernic seems to have found a way to turn heads—literally. The company recently teased its latest creation, the RG Rotate, on its YouTube channel, and it’s not just another square-shaped emulator. This device features a unique 1:1 display that swivels out, a design choice that immediately brings back memories of the iconic T-Mobile Sidekick from the early 2000s.
While we are used to seeing clamshell designs like the RG 35XXSP, the RG Rotate takes a different path. According to Anbernic, the device will run on Android and features a premium aluminum alloy frame. It’s expected to launch in two sleek colors: Polar Black and Aurora Silver. The star of the show, however, is the proprietary ultra-thin alloy hinge. Anbernic claims this mechanism has undergone rigorous high-durability testing, which is crucial because a swiveling screen introduces a whole new set of engineering challenges compared to standard hinges.
Beyond the screen, the RG Rotate offers some interesting customization options. The video reveals swappable L2 and R2 buttons, allowing users to adjust the height of the shoulder buttons to fit their grip perfectly. However, it’s not all good news for everyone; the teaser suggests the handheld might only feature a single USB-C port. This has already sparked some debate among enthusiasts who were hoping for a dedicated 3.5mm audio jack for latency-free gaming audio.
As for the price, Anbernic hasn't spilled the beans yet. However, looking at their history, it’s likely that the RG Rotate will be positioned as a more affordable alternative to high-end devices from competitors like Ayn or Retroid. For those of you looking for a bit of mechanical flair in your pocket, this looks like it could be a very fun addition to the collection. We’ll be keeping an eye on the official release date and final specs!
