Apple will let businesses buy ad placements in Maps, with promoted results and a new Suggested Places list. The feature is launching in the US and Canada this summer and Apple says it will label ads and avoid tying ad impressions to Apple IDs.

Apple is preparing to introduce advertisements into its Maps app, giving businesses the option to promote listings at the top of search results and inside a new "Suggested Places" list. The company announced the change in a recent newsroom post, saying the ad placements will start appearing in the US and Canada this summer.

Suggested Places is described as a recommendation surface that highlights locations based on trends nearby, recent user searches, and other signals. Apple says it will clearly mark paid placements so users can distinguish between organic results and sponsored ones.

Privacy is a recurring theme in Apple's messaging: the company notes that a user's location data and the ads they see and interact with in Maps will not be associated with their Apple Account. That echoes Apple's broader stance on minimizing personal data usage for advertising, though it leaves open questions about how ad targeting will actually work in practice.

For businesses, Maps ads could be a valuable way to reach customers already searching for places or services nearby. Promoted listings at the top of results and inclusion in Suggested Places may help smaller shops and restaurants be more discoverable when people are actively looking for local options.

From a user perspective, the change may be subtle or noticeable depending on how often promoted listings surface in searches. Apple’s commitment to labelling ads will be key to keeping the experience transparent, but some users may still find the presence of paid placements unwelcome compared with the previously cleaner Maps interface.

Expect more details as Apple rolls the feature out: pricing, targeting options, and the exact signals used to surface Suggested Places will determine how impactful ads in Maps become for both businesses and users.
