DJI Launches Affordable Lito Drones with Advanced Features

DJI is entering the budget drone market with its new Lito 1 and Lito X1 models, priced under $400 and weighing less than 249 grams. These drones aim to offer high-quality aerial video and advanced features like LiDAR and 360-degree obstacle avoidance for beginners.
DJI, following the success of its Neo lineup, is making another play for the budget drone segment with the introduction of the Lito 1 and Lito X1. These new drones are priced at under $400 and weigh in at less than 249 grams, making them an attractive option for beginners and those looking to avoid registration requirements. While designed to succeed DJI's Mini series, the Lito models boast features previously absent in their predecessors, such as LiDAR and comprehensive 360-degree obstacle avoidance.
In terms of video capabilities, the Lito series closely mirrors DJI's Neo 2 and Flip drones. However, unlike those models which are suitable for indoor use, the Lito drones, with their open propellers, are engineered for outdoor flight at higher speeds and altitudes. This makes them particularly well-suited for capturing dynamic activities like surfing or dirt bike racing. Initial testing suggests these drones offer exceptional value and performance for their price point, though a key drawback for US consumers is the uncertainty surrounding their official launch in the region.
The Lito models now represent DJI's entry-level open-propeller drones, as the Mini series is slated for no further updates. Both drones share an identical folding design, with the option of removable propeller guards for added protection. Their lightweight design allows novice pilots to operate them without a permit in many jurisdictions.
Both the Lito 1 and Lito X1 are equipped with omnidirectional sensors on the top and bottom, providing all-around obstacle detection. The Lito X1 further enhances this with a forward-facing LiDAR sensor, offering increased tracking precision – a feature rarely found in drones at this price. Additionally, the Lito X1 includes 42GB of internal storage, alongside microSD card support, while the Lito 1 relies solely on a microSD slot for expandable storage.
Powering these drones is an Intelligent Flight Battery promising up to 36 minutes of flight time, extendable to approximately 52 minutes with the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus (though this larger battery may not be available in all regions). Real-world testing indicates flight times closer to 25 minutes, which is still commendable for drones under $400.
The Lito series incorporates DJI's familiar FocusTrack features, including 360-degree ActiveTrack subject tracking with manual control and obstacle avoidance. They also support DJI's QuickShots, simplifying the creation of social media-ready aerial clips. However, certain features found on the Neo 2, such as gesture control, smartphone-only operation, and palm takeoffs, are not present in the Lito series.
These drones are compatible with various controllers, including the RC-N3 (requiring a smartphone) and the RC 2 (featuring a built-in screen). Both Lito models transmit 1080p 60fps video up to 10 miles using DJI's Occusync 4 system. Safety features like Return to Home (RTH) with battery warnings are included to help prevent accidents and lost drones.
In terms of performance, the Lito drones can reach speeds of approximately 26 mph in normal mode and up to 40 mph in sport mode, enabling creators to keep pace with fast-moving subjects. They can also handle winds up to 21 mph. While they may lack the extreme maneuverability of some higher-end models, their obstacle avoidance capabilities, particularly the Lito X1's LiDAR-assisted system, are remarkably effective for their price class.
Video quality sees a notable difference between the two models. The Lito X1 features a 40-megapixel sensor capable of 4K 60fps video with D-LogM and HDR recording, delivering superior clarity and low-light performance. The Lito 1, while still offering 4K 60fps, has a smaller sensor and lacks these advanced recording options, resulting in more noticeable grain in low-light conditions. Despite these differences, both drones provide excellent stabilization and deliver impressive video and photo quality suitable for social media, hobbyists, and content creators.
DJI's Lito series underscores the company's ambition to lead in all market segments, including the budget-friendly end. These drones offer a compelling package of advanced features and performance at an accessible price, positioning them as strong contenders for aspiring aerial cinematographers.
