Extension cords, often seen as a convenient solution for power needs, are not designed for permanent installation. Leaving them plugged in continuously can lead to a variety of safety hazards and potential damage.

Many of us treat extension cords like a permanent fixture in our homes or offices, plugging in devices and leaving them connected for extended periods. However, according to experts, this common practice can lead to unexpected and potentially dangerous consequences. Extension cords are generally intended for temporary use, not as a substitute for permanent wiring.

One of the primary concerns with leaving extension cords plugged in all the time is the risk of overheating. When cords are used continuously, especially under load, the internal wiring can generate heat. If this heat isn't dissipated properly, it can degrade the insulation, leading to short circuits or even fire hazards. This risk is amplified if the cord is covered by rugs, furniture, or other materials that impede airflow.

Another significant issue is wear and tear. Constant use means constant stress on the cord's connections, plugs, and sockets. This can lead to loose connections, frayed wires, and damage to the plug itself, all of which increase the likelihood of electrical malfunctions. Over time, the materials can become brittle, making them more susceptible to breaking.

Furthermore, extension cords are not designed to be subjected to the same safety standards and inspections as permanent electrical installations. They lack the robust protection mechanisms that hardwired systems have, making them more vulnerable to damage from everyday use, pets, or even accidental trips. For these reasons, it's advisable to unplug extension cords when they are not actively in use and to inspect them regularly for any signs of damage.
