Flipboard Launches Social Websites to Unify the Fediverse

Flipboard is introducing 'social websites,' a new experiment designed to aggregate decentralized social media feeds and RSS into single, manageable microsites.
Flipboard has long been a champion of the decentralized social media movement, and their latest experiment might just be the bridge we've been waiting for. The company is rolling out what they call "social websites," a project aimed at giving publishers and creators a simplified way to enter the often-confusing world of the "open social web." This includes the fediverse, Mastodon, and protocol-based platforms like Bluesky.
In simple terms, these social websites are microsites powered by Flipboard's Surf app. They allow creators to pull together blog posts, newsletters, and podcast episodes alongside real-time commentary from platforms like Bluesky and Mastodon. Instead of jumping between five different apps to see what people are saying about a specific topic, everything lives in one sleek, browsable space. For those of us who find the technical jargon of 'protocols' and 'federation' a bit much, this looks like a breath of fresh air.
We’ve already seen some early adopters jumping on board. Rolling Stone has created a dedicated site for its political coverage, and creator David Rushing launched "All Net," a hub for NBA fans that blends Threads, Bluesky, and Mastodon posts with YouTube clips. The goal here is clear: Flipboard wants to help creators take back control of their audiences from the "walled gardens" of mainstream social media giants. As Flipboard CEO Mike McCue puts it, creators are tired of investing in platforms where a black-box algorithm decides who sees their content.
Setting one of these up is surprisingly fast—McCue claims it takes about 15 minutes. By removing the complexity, Flipboard is making decentralized media accessible to everyone, not just the tech-savvy crowd. However, it remains to be seen if this will drive significant traffic back to publishers, especially in an era where AI search and declining link-click rates are making things difficult for digital media. For now, it’s a bold and much-needed experiment in making the internet feel a bit more open again.
