Google Maps Adds Two Gemini-Powered Navigation Upgrades

Google Maps is getting what the company describes as its biggest navigation upgrade in years, powered by its Gemini AI. The update bundles two headline features: a conversational travel assistant that helps plan trips and a revamped driving navigation experience that leans on AI to reduce distraction and improve guidance.

The travel assistant acts like a chatty trip planner inside Maps. You can ask it to build itineraries, suggest stops based on interests, and adapt plans in real time. Rather than toggling between search results and directions, users can hold an ongoing conversation with Maps to refine routes, estimate travel time, and surface recommendations—restaurants, attractions or quick detours—tailored to the trip context.

On the driving side, the upgrade focuses on clearer, smarter turn-by-turn guidance. Gemini helps generate more natural language prompts and prioritizes the most relevant route details, aiming to cut down cognitive load for drivers. The update also emphasizes timely suggestions—like lane guidance, upcoming exits, or lane-specific camera alerts—so drivers spend less time glancing at the screen and more time on the road.

Google says these features will gradually roll out, with availability dependent on region and device. Some functionality may require the latest Maps app and a Google account, and certain local features will arrive later as Maps integrates regional data and testing feedback.
