Google and OpenAI Bring Checkout to Chatbots

Google and OpenAI are rolling out new shopping features that let users discover and buy products directly through their chatbots. Google partnered with Gap Inc. to enable Gemini-assisted purchases across its brands while OpenAI updated ChatGPT's shopping interface.
The competition to make shopping conversational is picking up pace as Google and OpenAI add more commerce-friendly tools to their chatbots. Google announced a partnership with Gap Inc. that lets Gemini suggest and even buy clothing from Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, and Athleta without steering users away from the chat interface.
That means when you ask Gemini for outfit ideas, suggestions from Gap brands can appear inline, with an option to complete the purchase inside the assistant flow. Google has been experimenting with commerce features across its products for a while, and this move brings a major retail partner into the mix — a familiar approach that mirrors earlier deals from retailers such as Walmart and Target.
OpenAI, meanwhile, rolled out an updated shopping interface in ChatGPT. The refreshed experience focuses on product discovery and streamlined checkout, aiming to make it easier to move from browsing to buying while conversing with the model. OpenAI's changes appear designed to reduce friction and keep users inside the ChatGPT environment for more of the purchase journey.
Both approaches highlight a trend: chatbots are evolving from assistants that provide recommendations to platforms that handle transactions end to end. For users, the appeal is convenience — fewer tabs, less searching, and a checkout that feels like part of the conversation. For retailers and AI firms, the payoff is closer control of discovery, attribution, and, potentially, commerce fees.
As these features roll out, watch for how data sharing, payment handling, and return policies are presented in the chat flows. If well executed, conversational shopping could become a routine option for discovering and buying everyday items. If not, users might still prefer traditional checkout pages where they can compare and review more directly.
