Canada's Manitoba Proposes Ban on Social Media for Kids

Manitoba is poised to become the first Canadian province to implement a ban on social media for children, with Premier Wab Kinew recently announcing the initiative. The proposal also extends to restricting access to AI chatbots for the province's youth. Kinew expressed strong sentiments against the current landscape, stating at a fundraiser, "They're doing these very awful things to kids all in the name of a few likes, all in the name of more engagement, and all in the name of money." He emphasized the principle that "Our kids will never be for sale and their attention and their childhoods should never be profited from."

However, the specifics of this proposed ban remain largely undefined. Premier Kinew did not provide details regarding the age restrictions, the timeline for implementation, or the methods that would be used for enforcement. Following his remarks at the fundraiser, Kinew reportedly did not address reporters, according to CBC.

This potential ban in Manitoba aligns with broader discussions and actions happening across Canada. The Liberal Party of Canada recently voted in favor of restricting both social media and AI chatbot usage for individuals under 16. Other proposals within Canada are even more stringent, with some suggesting a cutoff age of 14. These Canadian efforts echo similar measures seen internationally, such as the ban recently enacted in Australia. Despite these legislative moves, the effectiveness of such bans is being questioned. A recent poll by the Molly Rose Foundation indicated that a significant number of teenagers continue to access banned social media platforms or have found ways to circumvent the restrictions.
