Windows Updates: Microsoft Gives Users More Control

Say goodbye to unexpected Windows updates interrupting your important meetings or gaming sessions. Microsoft has announced a significant overhaul of its Windows Update system, giving users unprecedented control over when updates are applied. The most notable change is the ability to indefinitely pause Windows updates, with users able to extend these pauses for 35 days at a time, and then reset the limit as often as needed.

This new flexibility is a direct response to user feedback highlighting the frustration caused by untimely updates and a lack of control over the update schedule. While Microsoft still emphasizes the importance of installing updates, particularly for security enhancements, they are now empowering users to decide the best time for their devices. This means you can continue working or playing without the worry of a forced restart, though it's still advisable to eventually install these crucial updates.

Beyond the extended pause feature, Microsoft is also ensuring that users can choose to shut down or restart their devices without immediately proceeding with an update. These quality-of-life improvements build upon recent changes that allowed users to skip updates during the initial setup of new Windows devices. Currently, these new Windows Update features are being rolled out to users in the Dev and Experimental Channels of the Windows Insider program, with wider availability expected soon.
