It seems like the days of affordable memory upgrades are behind us, at least for a while. If you’ve been eyeing a new high-end laptop or a flagship smartphone, you might want to brace your wallet. Reports are coming in that the global 'RAM crisis' is hitting major players hard, specifically Microsoft and Samsung. Both companies have started adjusting their pricing strategies, and the results aren't exactly budget-friendly for tech enthusiasts.

Microsoft has reportedly increased the prices of its Surface Pro and Surface Laptop models, particularly those featuring 16GB or 32GB of RAM. In some regions, these jumps are quite significant, making the 'pro' experience a luxury that many might have to reconsider. It’s a tough pill to swallow for Mobikolik.com readers who were waiting for the latest Surface hardware to refresh their workstations. The base models might still seem okay, but as soon as you want that extra performance, the price tag starts to look a bit scary.

Samsung isn't staying behind in this unfortunate trend either. The costs of their higher storage and RAM tiers for the Galaxy series are seeing a similar upward trajectory. This isn't just a corporate decision to increase profits; it’s largely driven by the rising costs of DRAM and NAND flash memory components. When the parts get expensive, the final product inevitably follows suit. Interestingly, this shift has led some analysts to make a joke that seemed impossible a few years ago: Apple is starting to look like the 'value brand' in certain configurations, simply because their pricing has remained relatively stable while others are spiking.

While we hope this is just a temporary fluctuation in the supply chain, it looks like high-performance hardware will carry a premium for the foreseeable future. If you are planning an upgrade, it might be wise to act sooner rather than later, or perhaps consider if you truly need that extra 16GB of RAM for your daily tasks.
