Microsoft is reportedly initiating its first voluntary buyout program for US employees, potentially affecting up to 7% of its domestic workforce. The program targets employees at the senior director level and below whose age and tenure sum to 70 or more.
Microsoft is reportedly preparing to offer voluntary buyouts to a significant portion of its US-based workforce. According to a report by CNBC, the tech giant is set to launch its first-ever voluntary retirement program, aiming to provide an exit option for eligible employees.
The program is said to be extended to US employees at the senior director level and below, specifically those whose combined years of employment and age reach 70 or higher. With approximately 125,000 employees in the United States as of June 2025, this initiative could potentially impact up to 8,750 individuals. This number is lower than the 15,000 employees laid off in May and July of 2025, but still represents a substantial workforce adjustment.
Amy Coleman, Microsoft's executive vice president and chief people officer, shared in a memo obtained by CNBC that the company hopes this program will allow eligible employees the choice to pursue their next steps on their own terms, with considerable support from Microsoft. Engadget has reached out to Microsoft for confirmation and further details regarding the reported buyout program.
While previous workforce reductions, such as the 2025 layoffs, were aimed at streamlining management layers and the gaming division, these new voluntary buyouts may be influenced by Microsoft's ongoing, significant investments in artificial intelligence. The company has reported substantial capital expenditures, amounting to $37.5 billion in Q2 2026, a large portion of which has been allocated to expanding its data center infrastructure. This aggressive spending on AI development and infrastructure could be a driving factor behind the current workforce adjustments.
