NVIDIA Boosts Laptop Graphics with New 12GB RTX 5070

Gamers and creators looking for more graphical horsepower on their laptops might have a new option soon. NVIDIA has announced a 12GB variant of its popular RTX 5070 laptop GPU, a move that comes as the company navigates strong demand for its GeForce products alongside memory supply challenges.

In a recent blog post detailing their latest Game Ready Drivers, NVIDIA revealed that partners will begin offering laptops equipped with this 12GB RTX 5070. This new configuration will complement the existing 8GB model that has been available since the RTX 50-series launched.

NVIDIA explained the rationale behind this new version: "Demand for GeForce RTX remains strong, and memory supply is constrained. In order to maximize memory availability, we are releasing the GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop GPU 12GB configuration with 24Gb G7 memory. This gives our partners access to an additional pool of memory to complement the 16Gb G7 supply that currently ships with most GeForce GPUs." Essentially, NVIDIA is tapping into a different, more readily available source of GDDR7 memory to ensure continued production and availability.

The first laptops featuring the 12GB RTX 5070 are anticipated to hit the market starting in June. Expect major manufacturers like ASUS, Lenovo, and MSI to integrate this GPU into some of their gaming and high-performance laptop lineups. While NVIDIA hasn't officially confirmed pricing yet, industry watchers suggest that laptops with the 12GB RTX 5070 could be priced similarly to current RTX 5070 Ti models, potentially around the $2,650 mark depending on other system configurations like RAM.

While the increase in VRAM from 8GB to 12GB is a welcome addition for many, it's worth noting a potential technical nuance. The new 12GB model utilizes 3GB memory modules (24Gb G7), differing from the 2GB modules (16Gb G7) in the 8GB version. However, unless NVIDIA has significantly altered the GPU's bus interface – which seems unlikely for a refresh – the additional memory might not be accessed as rapidly as on higher-tier cards like the RTX 5070 Ti. For the majority of gaming scenarios, this difference may not be drastically noticeable, but it's a detail to consider for those pushing the absolute limits of performance.
