Singapore police have arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with the alleged leak of Paramount+'s upcoming 'The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender'. The film, part of the popular Avatar franchise, was reportedly accessed remotely and partially shared online.
In a development that's sure to irk Paramount executives, Singaporean authorities have apprehended a 26-year-old man suspected of leaking content from the studio's upcoming film, 'The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender'. This news comes after considerable fan frustration regarding the film's shift from a theatrical release to a streaming debut on Paramount+ and its subsequent delays.
The film, a new installment in the beloved 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' franchise, has faced a bumpy road. Originally slated for a cinema run, it was pushed back twice before ultimately being moved to the streaming platform, where it's expected to land later this year. This decision didn't sit well with many dedicated fans, especially given the limited marketing efforts from Paramount.
However, the leak has apparently allowed some fans to see the movie ahead of its official release. According to reports, the arrested individual allegedly gained unauthorized remote access to a server, downloaded the film, and then disseminated portions of it online. In an interesting twist, Paramount reportedly rebranded the movie to 'Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender' shortly after the leak, possibly as a tactic to obscure leaked information from casual searches.
The suspect is currently under investigation for unauthorized computer access. If convicted, he could face significant penalties, including up to seven years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000.
Earlier this month, an interview with the X account holder @ImStillDissin, who initially posted clips from the film, revealed a rather casual attitude towards the leak. The individual reportedly viewed sharing the streaming-only movie as a form of 'trolling' and not a major offense. While this account holder initially resisted sharing the full movie, it's understood that the complete film eventually surfaced online through other channels.
Paramount's upcoming October 9th streaming release now faces an uphill battle in managing the impact of these premature disclosures. It seems the studio will indeed need all the luck it can get.
