Rec Room VR Shutdown: Is an AR Comeback on the Horizon?

Rec Room is set to close its VR doors in 2026, marking the end of an era for one of the metaverse's pioneers. However, rumors suggest a pivot to AR technology could keep the social platform alive.
The virtual reality landscape is shifting once again, and this time, it’s a bit of a bittersweet pill to swallow for metaverse enthusiasts. Rec Room, one of the most iconic social VR platforms that helped define the early days of the medium, has announced it will be shutting down its VR operations in 2026. While this might feel like the end of an era, it looks like the developers aren't quite ready to pull the plug on the brand entirely.
For years, Rec Room stood alongside giants like VRChat and Meta’s Horizon Worlds as a go-to destination for hanging out, playing user-generated games, and building digital communities. The decision to move away from VR seems to stem from the high costs of maintaining high-fidelity virtual environments and a market that hasn't expanded quite as fast as many hoped back in 2021. However, the silver lining here is a potential pivot toward Augmented Reality (AR).
There are strong indications that Rec Room might be eyeing a future within the Snap (Snapchat) ecosystem. Snap has been doubling down on its AR glasses and Spectacles, and a lightweight, social-heavy platform like Rec Room would be a perfect fit for that hardware. Instead of being fully immersed in a headset, the next generation of Rec Room players might be interacting with digital avatars layered over the real world.
What does this mean for you, the players? For now, the VR servers remain active, but the transition period is beginning. It seems the team is focusing on making the platform more accessible on mobile and potentially these new AR devices. While we will miss the deep immersion of the VR version, the prospect of taking Rec Room into the physical world via AR is an exciting evolution that could save the platform from total obsolescence.
