Rode unveils Video Core for budget livestreaming

Rode is extending its line of streamlined production tools with the Rodecaster Video Core, a more affordable all-in-one studio aimed at creators who are either just getting into video or already have audio gear and want to add HD visuals. Unlike its larger siblings, the Core removes most physical controls and expects users to run their shows from the Rodecaster app.

On the connectivity front, the Video Core packs three HDMI inputs, one HDMI output, four USB‑C ports, two Neutrik combo jacks and two 3.5mm connectors. Plug a compatible video device into a USB‑C port and you can mix up to four sources simultaneously. Network cameras are supported over Ethernet, and Rode’s Capture app can wirelessly bring in an iOS feed—handy for mobile shots or a second camera without extra cabling.

One of the practical touches is automated switching: the Core can be configured to change cameras based on audio inputs, which helps when managing multi-person streams and reduces constant manual switching. You can also record directly to an external drive and stream to YouTube, Twitch or other platforms from the same unit.

For users who already own Rode audio consoles, integration is smoother than you might expect. The Rodecaster Sync app links the Video Core with devices like the Rodecaster Pro II and Duo so you can assign shortcuts to hardware pads and operate audio and video from a single desk. That should cut down on mid-stream fiddling and keep production flowing.

Rode also rolled out a firmware update across compatible gear that enables EDL export for DaVinci Resolve and better handling of non‑standard resolutions and aspect ratios—think square social clips being auto-scaled for your broadcast. The Video Core is available for pre-order at $599, though Rode hasn’t set a shipping date yet.
