After what felt like a relatively quiet period for the audio giant, Sonos is making some noise again. The company has officially released two new consumer speakers that cater to very different needs: the portable Sonos Play and the more budget-friendly Era 100 SL. If you’ve been waiting to upgrade your home setup or looking for something to take on your next hike, these might just be the devices for you.

The Sonos Play is the star of the show for those who don't like to stay in one place. Priced at $299, it’s built with a rugged, water-resistant design and even features a handy utility loop for easy carrying. One of the coolest features seems to be the introduction of Bluetooth grouping. This allows you to pair the Play with other Play units or Move 2 speakers without needing a Wi-Fi connection—a perfect solution for beach days or camping trips where your home network is out of reach.

On the other hand, for those who prefer a more stationary and private experience, the Era 100 SL enters the fray at $189. As the 'SL' moniker suggests, this version drops the built-in microphones found in the standard Era 100. This not only brings the price down but also serves as a great option for users who are wary of voice assistants always listening in. It retains the same high-quality acoustic architecture of its predecessor, ensuring that you aren't sacrificing sound for privacy.

Both speakers are now widely available, and they seem to represent Sonos' strategy of providing more specialized hardware for its diverse user base. Whether you need the durability of the Play or the streamlined simplicity of the Era 100 SL, the ecosystem continues to grow in interesting directions. It will be exciting to see how these integrate with existing Sonos setups in the coming months.
