Sony Unveils 'True RGB' Mini LED TV Technology

Sony introduces its latest display branding, True RGB, aiming to redefine Mini LED performance with professional-grade color accuracy. This new tech utilizes pure red, green, and blue backlighting to achieve record-breaking color volume.
At CES 2026, the tech world was buzzing with a bit of confusion surrounding terms like 'Micro RGB' and 'RGB Mini LED.' It seems Sony has decided to clear the air—or perhaps add its own flavor to the mix—by introducing a new label for its upcoming high-end displays: True RGB. While the name might be new, the goal is clear: Sony wants to deliver the purest colors and the highest brightness levels ever seen in its home television lineup.
For those of you wondering what makes this different from standard Mini LED sets, it all comes down to the backlight. Most Mini LED TVs use blue LEDs filtered through quantum dots. Sony’s True RGB technology, however, uses individual red, green, and blue LED backlights paired with an LCD layer. This isn't exactly a brand-new invention—we've seen similar 'Micro RGB' concepts from Samsung and LG recently—but Sony claims its secret sauce lies in the processing. By borrowing algorithms from its legendary (and incredibly expensive) professional reference monitors used in Hollywood, Sony aims to offer a level of control that rivals the equipment used by film directors.
One of the biggest headaches for LED TV owners is 'blooming'—that annoying glow that appears around bright objects on a dark background. Sony says its True RGB tech significantly reduces this effect while also improving color accuracy when you're not sitting directly in front of the screen. It looks like the company is doubling down on its 'cinema at home' philosophy, leveraging its unique position as both a camera maker and a display manufacturer.
We don't have the full specs or pricing just yet, but Sony has promised to share more details soon. The new Bravia True RGB TVs are expected to hit the market later this spring. If you've been waiting for a TV that bridges the gap between consumer tech and professional grading monitors, this might be the one to watch.
