Spotify Cracks Down on Family Plan Sharing with QR Codes

Spotify is implementing a new QR code verification system to prevent unauthorized sharing of its Family plans. This move aims to ensure that only members of the same household are using the discounted subscription.
Spotify is stepping up its efforts to ensure that its Family plans are only being used by people who actually live together. Co-CEO Alex Norström confirmed during a recent earnings call that the company is rolling out a new QR code verification method. This system requires the primary account holder, or plan manager, to scan a QR code displayed on their phone, effectively verifying the location of other plan members.
This initiative comes as Spotify looks to curb the widespread practice of sharing Family plans with individuals who don't reside in the same household, a practice that significantly dilutes the intended value of the discounted subscription. While some might call it a "crackdown," Norström described it as a "routine improvement" to their existing verification processes. He highlighted that the Family Plan has been a core offering for nearly 12 to 13 years, and this update is a natural evolution to maintain its integrity.
The new verification process is designed to be relatively straightforward for legitimate users. The plan manager will generate a unique QR code, and other members will need to scan it periodically to confirm their connection to the primary account. This is expected to deter individuals from sharing their accounts with friends or family members who live in different locations, a common workaround that has likely cost Spotify significant revenue over the years. It's an interesting move from Spotify, showing they're serious about maintaining the subscription model's intended structure. We'll have to see how smoothly this rolls out and if it causes any friction for genuine family members who might be temporarily separated.
