Subaru is finally stepping up its game in the electric vehicle market. At the New York International Auto Show, the company pulled the curtain back on its first-ever three-row electric SUV, aptly named the Getaway. For families who have been waiting for a rugged, all-electric alternative to the Ascent, this looks like it could be the answer. While it shares its DNA with Toyota’s upcoming 2027 Highlander EV, Subaru has managed to keep its signature outdoorsy spirit intact.

Under the hood—or rather, under the floor—the Getaway is built on the e-TNGA platform. Initially, all models will feature Subaru's legendary Symmetrical all-wheel drive system, delivering a punchy 420 horsepower. One of the most welcome additions is the native NACS-compatible charging port, meaning no more fumbling with adapters at most charging stations. However, the charging speed is a bit of a mixed bag; at 150kW, it’s expected to charge from 10 to 80 percent in about 30 minutes. It’s not the fastest in the industry, but it should be sufficient for most road trippers.

The performance specs for the first batch, arriving late this year as 2027 models, are quite impressive. Equipped with a 95.8kWh battery, the Getaway aims for a range of over 300 miles. It also boasts a zero-to-60 time of under five seconds, which is surprisingly quick for a vehicle of this size. Subaru also mentioned a standard-range model with a 77kWh battery will follow in 2027, making the entry price point likely more accessible for the average consumer.

Inside, the Getaway is all about modern comfort. You get a massive 14-inch touchscreen that supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, alongside a 12.3-inch digital cluster for the driver. Whether you need to haul seven people with a second-row bench or prefer the luxury of six seats with captain’s chairs, the flexibility is there. With 8.3 inches of ground clearance and the X-Mode system, this EV isn't just for the suburbs; it’s ready for the trails too.
