This electrifying run, achieved at an NHRA event in Charlotte, officially crowns it the new world record holder for an EV in this discipline. It's a significant leap forward, smashing Ford's own previous EV record of 7.62 seconds, set by the Cobra Jet 1800 last September, by a substantial 0.75 seconds. Talk about progress!

Under the hood – or rather, the chassis – the Cobra Jet 2200 boasts a colossal 2,200 horsepower, thanks to a newly engineered electric motor and inverter combination. Ford opted for a more streamlined approach, using two motors and inverters instead of four, which not only simplifies the design but also boosts efficiency to an impressive 98 percent. While overall power is up by a hefty 600 horsepower, the new motors and inverters are half the weight of their predecessors. Powering this beast is a 900-volt architecture and a 32 kWh battery that can be fully charged in just 20 minutes, more than enough to meet the NHRA's 45-minute turnaround requirement.

This isn't just about raw power; the Cobra Jet 2200 packs some unique features for an EV. It includes a clutch that allows the driver to instantly deploy all its power for maximum acceleration off the line. Plus, a multi-speed transmission helps the car stay within its optimal power band throughout the entire run, shaving off precious time – up to a second, according to Ford. Even the battery design was optimized for weight distribution, ensuring superior traction. While some of this cutting-edge technology, like the high-efficiency motors and the 900-volt system, could potentially find its way into consumer vehicles, the current landscape for BEV investment from US automakers is a bit uncertain. Ford recently announced a shift for the F-150 Lightning to an EREV model with a gas generator, and GM has also delayed its next-generation full-size EV trucks and SUVs.
