Lucid is entering a significant new chapter in its corporate journey. The luxury electric vehicle manufacturer announced on Tuesday a substantial expansion of its existing robotaxi agreement with Uber, alongside a major leadership change. In a move that signals a shift in strategic focus, the company is also securing additional investment to bolster its ambitious production goals.

The headline of the announcement is the expanded deal with Uber. The ride-hailing giant is increasing its commitment to Lucid’s upcoming Gravity SUVs, raising the order from an initial 20,000 units to 35,000. These vehicles are slated to join Uber's growing robotaxi fleet, a project that involves a collaborative effort with autonomous delivery specialist Nuro. This expansion suggests that both companies see a strong future for luxury, high-capacity electric vehicles in the autonomous transport market.

Perhaps more surprising is the appointment of Lucid's new CEO. Moving away from traditional automotive backgrounds, the company has selected a leader from the world of industrial mobility—specifically from an industry focused on elevators, escalators, and moving walkways. This choice indicates that Lucid may be looking at 'mobility' through a much broader lens, focusing on the engineering of movement rather than just the manufacturing of cars.

This transition comes at a critical time as Lucid continues to navigate the competitive EV landscape. With the backing of substantial investment—often linked to the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund—the company is positioning the Gravity SUV as a cornerstone of its future. By aligning with Uber’s autonomous ambitions, Lucid appears to be diversifying its revenue streams beyond direct consumer sales, tapping into the potentially lucrative 'transportation-as-a-service' sector.
